His debut series Harenchi Gakuen (1968) was the first WSJ manga with erotic content, causing public controversy but also establishing the magazine's willingness to push limits. Nagai later created Mazinger Z, which set the template for the giant robot piloted from inside, the basis of the mecha genre.

Its last chapter in the magazine, number 116, ran in No. 41 · 1972 (September 5, 1972), after almost 4 years of serialization.
