Hiroyuki Takei is the creator of Shaman King (1998–2004). A former assistant to Nobuhiro Watsuki on Rurouni Kenshin, he debuted in Jump with Butsu Zone (1997) and then created Yoh Asakura, a laid-back shaman who enters the Shaman Fight, a tournament held every 500 years to choose the Shaman King, alongside the samurai ghost Amidamaru. The series ended abruptly in Jump in 2004; Takei completed its true ending years later in the kanzenban edition. It was adapted into an anime in 2001 and again in 2021.
