6 Mazinger Z debuted in Weekly Shōnen Jump issue 189 on September 12, 1972. Created by Go Nagai, the series follows teenager Koji Kabuto as he pilots a giant super robot — built by his late grandfather — to defend humanity against the mechanical beasts of the villainous Dr. Hell. Mazinger Z is widely credited as the manga that invented the piloted giant robot (mecha) genre, directly inspiring Gundam, Evangelion and countless others. It ran in WSJ for one year before concluding in 1973.
